Why Chaturthi? The Sanskrit Meaning

Chaturthi (चतुर्थी) means the fourth — from chatur (चतुर, four). It is the fourth lunar day of Bhadrapada Shukla Paksha (the bright fortnight of the month of Bhadrapada). According to the Ganesha Purana, Ganesha was born at mid-day on this tithi, which is why noon is the most sacred time for his worship.

Bhadrapada (भाद्रपद) itself comes from bhadra (auspicious) + pada (step/foot) — the auspicious step into the harvest season. Ganesha, as the deity of beginnings, governs this threshold moment of the year.

Whatever sins from this life and past lives — may they all be destroyed with every step of circumambulation.
10. Visarjana (विसर्जन)
ॐ गणपते गच्छ गच्छ। पुनरागमनाय च।
O Ganapati, depart for now — and return again next year.

What to Offer Ganesha — and Why

Modak (मोदक)
From √mud — bliss. Ganesha's favourite; symbolises the bliss of self-knowledge.
Durva grass (दूर्वा)
From dūra (far) + ava (going away). Durva repels negative forces; sacred to Ganesha alone.
Red hibiscus (जपाकुसुम)
Represents Shakti energy. The Ganesha Purana prescribes red flowers specifically.
Coconut (नारिकेल)
The hard shell = ego, the water = mind, the kernel = Atman. Breaking it symbolises ego dissolution.

10-Day Festival: Anant Chaturdashi Visarjan

The festival lasts 10 days — Ganesh Sthapana (installation) on Chaturthi to Anant Chaturdashi (September 17, 2027) when the idol is immersed in water. The immersion (visarjan — विसर्जन, from √sṛj, to release) signifies that the divine, having visited, returns to its cosmic source — and will come again.
