What Does "Janmashtami" Mean in Sanskrit?

WordSanskritMeaning
जन्मJanmaBirth — from √jan (to be born, to produce). Same root as jāti (caste/species), janani (mother), janaka (father). English "genesis" shares this Proto-Indo-European root.
अष्टमीAṣṭamīEighth — from aṣṭa = eight. Krishna was born on the 8th lunar day (tithi). 8 in Vedic numerology represents Saturn and completeness through trial — apt for a god born in a prison.
कृष्णKṛṣṇaDark, all-attracting — from √kṛṣ (to attract, to plough). Also means "the dark one" — dark as the rain cloud, dark as the night sky. His name contains his nature: he draws everything to him.
जन्माष्टमीJanmāṣṭamīThe eighth-day birth festival. A tatpurusha compound: janma (birth) + aṣṭamī (eighth tithi). Together: "the eighth day of birth" — the tithi on which the Lord took birth.
नन्दोत्सवNandotsavaNanda's festival — celebrated the day after Janmashtami. Nanda (नन्द = joy, prosperity) was Krishna's foster father. The day the village of Gokul celebrated his birth.
भाद्रपदBhādrapadaThe 6th Hindu month (Aug–Sep). From bhadra (auspicious) + pada (step/foot). The auspicious-footed month — when the monsoon is full and nature is most alive.

The Birth of Krishna — Story from the Bhagavata Purana

👑 The Prophecy Against Kamsa

King Kamsa of Mathura was driving his sister Devaki to her husband Vasudeva's home after their wedding, when a divine voice (Akashvani) declared: "Kamsa, the eighth son of this woman you celebrate will be your death." Kamsa immediately tried to kill Devaki. Vasudeva intervened and promised to hand over every child born to them. Kamsa imprisoned both in a dungeon, killing each child as it was born.

⛓️ Six Children Killed

Six sons were born to Devaki and Vasudeva in prison — Kamsa killed each one. The seventh child (Balarama) was miraculously transferred to Rohini's womb in Gokul. The eighth was Krishna.

🌙 The Night of Krishna's Birth

On the eighth night of Krishna Paksha in Bhadrapada, at the Nishita kala (midnight), with the Rohini nakshatra ascendant and all the stars aligned, Devaki gave birth to a divine child with dark skin, lotus eyes, and four arms holding the conch, chakra, mace, and lotus. The prison lit up with divine light. Guards fell asleep. Chains fell off Vasudeva's wrists.

🌊 Vasudeva Crosses the Yamuna

Vasudeva took the infant Krishna in a basket on his head and walked out of the prison. The doors opened on their own. He reached the Yamuna river — swollen with monsoon floods. As soon as Krishna's feet touched the water, the Yamuna parted. A great serpent (Sheshanaga) spread its hood over the child as an umbrella in the rain. Vasudeva reached Gokul, swapped Krishna with the baby girl of Yashoda, and returned.

🌟 Kamsa's Defeat Foretold

When Kamsa tried to kill the baby girl (believing it to be the eighth child), she slipped from his hands, rose into the sky, revealed herself as the goddess Yogamaya, and declared: "Fool — the one who will kill you is already born and safe." Kamsa was shaken. But it was too late. Krishna had already begun his leela in Gokul.

Sanskrit Verse from Bhagavata Purana — The Birth Shloka

अथ सर्वगुणोपेतः कालः परमशोभनः।
यर्ह्येवाजनजन्मर्क्षं शान्तर्क्षग्रहतारकम्॥

Atha sarva-guṇopetaḥ kālaḥ parama-śobhanaḥ | yarhyevājanjanmarkṣaṃ śāntarkṣagrahātārakam ||

"Then arrived that most auspicious time endowed with all good qualities — when the Lord who is never born took His birth nakshatra, and the stars, planets and constellations were all at peace." — Bhagavata Purana 10.3.1

Janmashtami Puja Vidhi — How to Celebrate at Home

1

Fast Through the Day

Most devotees fast on Janmashtami — either nirjala (no water) or phalahar (fruits only). The fast is broken after the Nishita puja at midnight or the next morning after sunrise. Children and the elderly may observe a partial fast.

उपवासेन कृष्णं भजेत्(Upavāsena Kṛṣṇaṃ bhajet)
2

Decorate the Cradle (Jhula/Palna)

Set up a small cradle or jhula for the baby Krishna idol (Laddoo Gopal). Decorate with flowers, tulsi leaves, and a small cloth canopy. Place the idol lying down (as a newborn) until midnight, when it is "born."

पालने कृष्णं स्थापयेत्(Pālane Kṛṣṇaṃ sthāpayet)
3

Decorate Small Footprints

In many traditions, small footprints of baby Krishna are made with atta (flour) or kumkum from the door inward — symbolising the Lord entering the home. This tradition is especially strong in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.

पादचिह्नं गृहे कुर्यात्(Pādacihnaṃ gṛhe kuryāt)
4

Midnight Abhishek — The Main Puja

At the Nishita muhurat (12:02 AM), bathe the Krishna idol with panchamrita — milk, curd, ghee, honey, and sugar. Then with water, gangajal, and rosewater. Dress the idol in new clothes. Offer tulsi, flowers, butter (makhan), mishri. Light diyas and incense.

पञ्चामृतस्नानं कुर्यात्(Pañcāmṛtasnānaṃ kuryāt)
5

Aarti and Bhajan

Sing Krishna's aarti ("Jai Jagdish Hare" or "Jai Jai Yashoda Nandan") and bhajans. Ring a bell 108 times as the abhishek happens. Chant "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya" 108 times with a tulsi mala.

ॐ नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय(Om Namo Bhagavate Vāsudevāya)
6

Prasad — Makhan Mishri & Panchamrita

Offer and distribute the panchamrita used in the abhishek as prasad. Also offer makhan (butter) and mishri (rock sugar) — Krishna's favourite foods as a child in Vrindavan. Dhaniya panjiri (roasted coriander powder with nuts and sugar) is the traditional Janmashtami prasad in North India.

माखनं मिश्रीं च निवेदयेत्(Mākhanaṃ miśrīṃ ca nivedayet)

Krishna Mantras for Janmashtami

Dvadasakshari Mantra (12 syllables)

ॐ नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय

Om Namo Bhagavate Vāsudevāya

"Salutations to the Lord, Vasudeva (son of Vasudeva / Krishna)." The most powerful Vaishnava mantra — the same one Prahlad chanted, the same one Narada gave to Dhruva. Chant 108 times during the midnight puja.

Mool Mantra of Krishna

ॐ क्लीं कृष्णाय नमः

Om Klīṃ Kṛṣṇāya Namaḥ

"Om, salutations to Krishna." Klīṃ is the bija (seed) mantra of attraction — appropriate for Krishna whose very name means "the all-attracting one."

Govinda Mantra

हरे कृष्ण हरे कृष्ण कृष्ण कृष्ण हरे हरे। हरे राम हरे राम राम राम हरे हरे॥

Hare Kṛṣṇa Hare Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Hare Hare | Hare Rāma Hare Rāma Rāma Rāma Hare Hare ||

The Maha Mantra — 16 names, 32 syllables. Hare = the power of Hari (Vishnu), also calling on Hara (Radha, the energy of the Lord). Kṛṣṇa = the all-attracting. Rāma = he who gives bliss. Chanting this continuously is the recommended practice for Janmashtami.

Yes. Janmashtami is a gazetted public holiday across India. It is a full holiday in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and several other states. Schools and government offices will be closed on August 16, 2027.

What is Dahi Handi in Janmashtami?

Dahi Handi (दही हांडी) is celebrated the day after Janmashtami (August 17, 2027). Young men form human pyramids to break a pot of curd/butter hung high up — re-enacting young Krishna stealing butter from neighbours' pots in Gokul. It is especially popular in Maharashtra and Gujarat.

Why is Janmashtami celebrated at midnight?

Krishna was born at the Nishita kala — the deepest midnight hour, considered the most sattvic time of night. The Bhagavata Purana says he was born when Rohini nakshatra was ascendant and all planetary positions were auspicious. Midnight also symbolises the darkest hour before light — the divine appearing in the greatest darkness.

What is the difference between Janmashtami and Gokulashtami?

Janmashtami and Gokulashtami are the same festival — just different regional names. "Janmashtami" (जन्माष्टमी) is the pan-Indian name meaning "the eighth day of birth." "Gokulashtami" (गोकुलाष्टमी) is the name used in Maharashtra and South India — emphasising Gokul, where Krishna grew up. In Tamil Nadu it's called "Krishnashtami" or "Ashtami Rohini."

What is Rohini nakshatra and why is it important for Janmashtami?

Rohini (रोहिणी — "the red one / the ascending one") is the 4th nakshatra, located in Taurus. It is the moon's favourite nakshatra — the moon is said to be exalted here. Krishna was born when the moon was in Rohini. In 2027, Rohini nakshatra is present on August 16 from 6:18 AM — making it an ideal tithi for the celebration.
