Vāstu Śāstra: Ancient India's
Science of Architecture and Space
The word vāstu comes from the Sanskrit vas — to dwell. Vāstu Śāstra is the ancient Indian science of habitation: the principles governing how buildings should be oriented, proportioned, and sited in relation to the natural environment. Far from being superstition, it was a systematic attempt to align human-made structures with the forces — cardinal directions, sunlight, wind, water — that govern the quality of a living or working space.
The tradition is documented in texts like the Mānasāra (c. 5th–7th century CE), the Mayamata, and Varähamihira's Bṛhat Saṃhitā. These texts — written in Sanskrit — give systematic rules for town planning, temple design, palace architecture, and domestic construction. The Mānasāra alone runs to 70 chapters.
The influence of Vāstu Śāstra extended far beyond India. The architectural traditions of Bali, Cambodia (Angkor Wat), Thailand, and Burma are all rooted in principles derived from the Indian Vāstu and āgama (ritual architecture) traditions, transmitted through the cultural diffusion of Hinduism and Buddhism across Southeast Asia.
The Vāstu Puruṣa Maṇḍala
The foundational diagram of Vāstu Śāstra is the Vāstu Puruṣa Maṇḍala — a square grid divided into 81 (9×9) or 64 (8×8) squares, each governed by a deity corresponding to a direction or cosmic principle. The placement of rooms, doors, and functional spaces within a building follows the logic of this mandala — matching human activity to the energetic quality of each zone.

Vāstu and Angkor Wat
Angkor Wat — the largest religious monument in the world — was designed in the 12th century CE by Khmer architects working within the framework of Indian Vāstu and temple architecture principles. Its orientation (facing west, unusually, toward the setting sun — because it was a funerary temple for Suryavarman II), its concentric enclosures (representing the rings of Mount Meru), and its proportional system all derive from the Indian śilpaśāstra (architectural science) tradition.
The Mānasāra and related texts were the primary architectural references for temple builders across Southeast Asia. The cultural transmission was so complete that Cambodian temple architecture is essentially applied Indian architectural science — a legacy still standing at a scale visible from space.
