धातु-परिचय
What is a धातु (Dhātu)? — The Verb Root
A धातु (dhātu — literally "that which is placed/laid down") is the irreducible core of a verb. It is written with the √ symbol before it. From every dhātu, Sanskrit builds dozens of words across multiple word-classes. The same root appears in verbs, nouns, adjectives, and adverbs — changing its form but keeping its core meaning.
Stem Formation
√कृ (kṛ) → करोति (karoti) · कर्म (karma) · कर्तृ (kartṛ) · क्रिया (kriyā) · संस्कार (saṃskāra) √गम् (gam) → गच्छति (gacchati) · गति (gati) · गम्य (gamya) · आगम (āgama) √भू (bhū) → भवति (bhavati) · भाव (bhāva) · भूत (bhūta) · विभव (vibhava)
Notice: each root carries one core idea through every derived word. √gam always involves movement; √kṛ always involves doing/making. This is why Sanskrit vocabulary is so learnable — know the root, understand the family.
