(Loṭ) — Imperative Endings vs. Present Endings

The imperative uses the same present stem but different endings. The 2nd person singular is special — it is usually just the bare stem (for Class 1: the stem itself, sometimes + hi). The 3rd person adds -tu (sg), -tām (du), -ntu (pl). The 1st person is rare but used in wishes.

Stem Formation

Present ends → Imperative ends (same stem):

2nd singular imperative is the simplest form — often just the stem: भव (bhava — be!), गच्छ (gaccha — go!), पठ (paṭha — read!). These are the oldest and most natural forms of direct address in Sanskrit.
