The Lamp That Never Goes Out

माहेश्वरे रात्रौ सर्वे शयन्ति स्म। परन्तु अहिल्यायाः कक्षे दीपः प्रज्वलति स्म। सा पत्राणि लिखति स्म — दूरस्थेभ्यः अधिकारिभ्यः। प्रत्येकं पत्रे तस्याः हस्ताक्षरम् — प्रत्येकस्मिन् निर्णये तस्याः विचारः। राज्यशासनं सा स्वयं करोति स्म — न अन्येभ्यः सम्पूर्णतया न्यस्यति।

At Maheshwar, when everyone else slept, a lamp burned in Ahilya's chamber. She was writing — to administrators in distant provinces. Every letter bore her own handwriting — every decision bore her own thought. She administered the kingdom herself — never fully delegating the most important choices. The lamp was a promise she kept with her people every night.
