The River Rises
एकस्मिन् वर्षे नर्मदा अतिवृष्ट्या उच्चतरा जाता। क्षेत्राणि जलमग्नानि, सस्यानि नष्टानि। कृषकाः रुदन्तः अहिल्यायाः समक्षम् आगतवन्तः। "रानी, अस्माकं भोजनं, अस्माकं जीवनम् — सर्वं नष्टम्।" अहिल्या — एकक्षणमपि न विलम्बिता — अवदत् : "उद्घाटयत अन्नभण्डारम्।"
One year the Narmada rose dangerously high from excess rainfall. Fields were flooded, crops were destroyed. Farmers came weeping before Ahilya. "Queen, our food, our lives — all is lost." Ahilya — without a moment's hesitation — said: "Open the granary."
