The Morning Walk

प्रतिप्रभाते सावित्री विद्यालयाय गच्छति स्म। मार्गे जनाः तिष्ठन्ति स्म — क्रोधेन, भयेन। ते मृत्तिकां, प्रस्तरान् च क्षिपन्ति स्म। "गृहं गच्छ! स्त्रियः न पाठयन्ति!" सावित्री मार्गे अतिष्ठत् — स्थिरा, अविचलिता।

Every morning Savitribai walked to school (vidyālayāya — dative: "towards the school"). On the path people stood — in anger, in fear. They threw mud and stones. "Go home! Women do not teach!" Savitribai stood firm on the path — steady (sthirā — स्थिरा), unshaken (avicalitā — अविचलिता).
