The Woman at the Door
A widow — Kashi — knocked on the door of the Phule home one night. She was pregnant (garbhavatī — गर्भवती), abandoned (parityaktā — परित्यक्ता), and afraid. Savitribai opened the door and looked at her — fearlessly. "Come in," she said in gentle tones. "This home is yours too." Kashi entered, weeping — it was the beginning of a new life.
