The Twenty-Eighth of November
नवत्यधिकाष्टादशशतस्य नवम्बरमासे ज्योतिरावः शरीरम् अत्यजत्। पुणेनगरे शोकः व्यापतः — जनसागरः एकत्र आगतः। सावित्री स्तब्धा नासीत् — अश्रूणि आसन्, परन्तु चित्तं दृढम्। समाजः अपेक्षयत् — "पुरुषः क्रियाकर्म करिष्यति।" सावित्री अन्यत् अचिन्तयत्।
In November 1890, Jyotirao left his body (śarīram atyajat — शरीरम् अत्यजत्). In Pune city, grief (śoka — शोकः) spread — a sea of people gathered together. Savitribai was not frozen in place — there were tears, but her citta (चित्तम् — mind) was firm. Society expected — "A man will perform the last rites." Savitribai thought otherwise.
