शान्ति
Shanti
(śānti)Peace; inner stillness; cessation of all disturbance
Full Meaning
Śānti is not merely the absence of conflict — it is the presence of deep inner stillness. In Vedic tradition, prayers end with śānti śānti śānti (three repetitions) to invoke peace in the three planes of existence: the physical body (adhibhautika), the subtle/psychological (adhidaivika), and the cosmic/spiritual (adhyātmika). True śānti is freedom from all agitation.
Etymology
From the root śam (शम्) — to be calm, to be appeased, to rest.
Usage in Sanskrit Texts
Chanted at the end of Vedic prayers and meditations. The three-fold repetition (śānti śānti śānti) addresses the three sources of suffering described in the Upanishads.
ॐ शान्तिः शान्तिः शान्तिः — Om. Peace. Peace. Peace. (Close of Vedic prayers)
