Ahilyabai Holkar was born on May 31, 1725 in Chondi village, Ahmednagar district, Maharashtra. She was discovered by Maratha general Malhar Rao Holkar at age eight while performing puja at a temple. She married Khanderao Holkar and came to Maheshwar. After her husband's death at Kumbher in 1754 and her father-in-law's death in 1766, she became the ruler of Maheshwar in 1767 and ruled for 28 years until her death on August 13, 1795.

Ahilyabai Holkar restored over 100 temples across India including Somnath (Gujarat), Kashi Vishwanath (Varanasi), Kedarnath (Uttarakhand), Badrinath (Uttarakhand), Trimbakeshwar (Nashik), Grishneshwar (Aurangabad), Omkareshwar (Madhya Pradesh), Mahakaleshwar (Ujjain), and many more. She also built dharmashalas (rest houses), wells, roads, and feeding centres along all major pilgrimage routes in India.
