भ्वादिगण-परिचय
Class 1 — भ्वादि (Bhvādi): The Workhorse
भ्वादि (bhvādi) gets its name from भू (bhū), the first verb in this class. Class 1 covers hundreds of roots and generates the most common verb forms in Sanskrit. The connecting -a- gives these verbs a flowing, musical quality — bhavati, gacchati, paṭhati, vadati, hasati. The present-tense endings for Class 1 parasmaipada are identical for ALL roots in this class.
Stem Formation
Formula: √ROOT + GUṆA UPGRADE + अ (connecting vowel) → Present Stem Then add endings: -ति · -तः · -न्ति (3rd) | -सि · -थः · -थ (2nd) | -आमि · -आवः · -आमः (1st)
The connecting -a- is sometimes called the vikaraṇa (विकरण — class-marker). It is what distinguishes this tense from others. In the imperfect past, the same stem gets the augment a- prefixed: a + bhava + t = abhavat.
