Aṣṭāṅga Yoga — The 8 Limbs

Patañjali's 2,400-year-old system — 87% of yoga has nothing to do with stretching

योगश्चित्तवृत्तिनिरोधः । तदा द्रष्टुः स्वरूपेऽवस्थानम् ॥

yogaścittavṛttinirodhaḥ | tadā draṣṭuḥ svarūpe'vasthānam ||

"Yoga is the cessation of the fluctuations of the mind. Then the seer abides in its own nature."

Patañjali, Yoga Sūtras 1.2–1.3 — c. 400 BCE

Before yoga became exercise, it was a complete science of consciousness. Patañjali's Aṣṭāṅga (eight limbs) are: Yama (social ethics), Niyama (personal discipline), Āsana (posture), Prāṇāyāma (breath), Pratyāhāra (sensory withdrawal), Dhāraṇā (concentration), Dhyāna (meditation), Samādhi (absorption in the absolute). The physical postures are limb 3 of 8 — and they were designed for one purpose: to make the body still enough to meditate without distraction. The goal was never a flexible body. It was a free mind.

💡 Why this matters today

The Sanskrit root √yuj means "to yoke, to unite" — the same root as the English word "yoke." The ancient meaning: yoking the individual self (jīvātman) to the universal Self (paramātman). Every yoga class you attend is, whether you know it or not, a 2,400-year-old technology for union with the cosmos.

योगYoga

From √yuj = to yoke, unite. Same Indo-European root as English "yoke," Latin "jugum." Union of individual and universal consciousness.
